Pickle Factory Special: Caitlin

Pickle Factory, in partnership with Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet, is delighted to present 8 days of engagements in Calcutta and Bolpur with Light Ladd and Emberton from Cardiff, centring around their award-winning production CAITLIN.

The project is supported by British Council and Wales Arts International, with local partners Goethe Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata, Padatik Theatre, Think Arts and Kala Bhavana.

Caitlin was the wife of poet Dylan Thomas. At the start of the 1970s, twenty years after he died, she started going to Alcoholics Anonymous. In a circle of 40 chairs, set out for an AA meeting Caitlin makes a determined effort to deal with her tempestuous past. The audience of just 20 people sits with Caitlin in the circle as she revisits her life with Dylan. The unoccupied chairs become part of the action in this physical and powerful duet. The audience are placed at the heart of action and are witness to Caitlin’s recounting of a relationship that was fuelled by love, addiction, jealousy and infidelity. The work is brutal and tender, physically powerful and at times, grotesque.
