  • who is a dancer / movement artist?
  • what can a moving, performing body be?
  • who can work with it?
  • who is and could be interested in watching it?
  • how and where can we encounter it?
  • how can we engage with what the artists propose?

Our inaugural season responds to four key words that lie at the core of the Pickle Factory – dance, movement, practice, discourse. We attempt to reflect on the wide variety that these four words actually capture, opening up how one can look at performance work originating from movement artists and the trained, moving, performing body. The programme locates itself in diverse lenses through which to view and perceive work, offering a pluralism of experience and expression.

Pickle Factory Season 1 comprises three elements:

  • A two-week residency for professional dancers culminating in a series of public interventions, led by award winning choreographer from Edinburgh, Janis Claxton.
  • A fortnight-long exhibition of installations and art works on the moving body in performance, along with several allied events. Contributors include Padmini Chettur, Victoria Long, Calcutta Instagrammers, the British Council, and Jadavpur University.
  • An eight-day festival of performances, conversations, workshops and more, featuring the work of four internationally acclaimed Indian artists:
Padmini Chettur, Daminee Benny Basu, Preethi Athreya, Kapila Venu.

Each artist has been curated separately to offer a range of engagements spanning several days and across several venues. This manner of programming allows us to experience many different facets of each artist, and enables us to see and savour their work with more context rather than in artistic isolation.
