At Pickle Factory Dance Foundation, we believe that open, accessible and pluralistic homes for the arts are transformative for arts and artists, audiences and communities, neighbourhoods and cities, and necessary for human and social wellbeing and development. Widening Circles: Pickle Factory Season 2 takes forward this belief, featuring artists and guests from India, Switzerland, Australia, Germany, Scotland, and Canada spanning backgrounds of classical and contemporary dance, physical theatre, multimedia performance, puppet-theatre, circus-theatre, performance criticism, and more. The Season offers performances, workshops, post-show discussions, artist interactions, training and capacity building, a roundtable on repurposing spaces, and arts education and community outreach events.
Our History, Our Future
Pickle Factory Dance Foundation is a hub for the practice, discourse and presentation of dance and movement work in Calcutta – a space to think, meet, know, talk, imagine dance.
Since our first Season in February-March 2018, we have worked with artists and guests from India, Scotland, USA, Lithuania, The Philippines, Switzerland, China, and Wales presenting performances, talks, workshops, lecture-demonstrations, dance in public spaces, exhibitions and more. We have reached audiences across the city and thousands more online.
We are currently nomadic, occupying different kinds of spaces across the city –plush auditoria, genteel clubhouses, restored colonial buildings, disused cinemas. We transform them into pop-up venues for the arts and infuse them with fresh energy, bringing together atmospheric and inspiring spaces, imaginative art and artists, diverse audiences and communities, and exciting conversations and ideas.
Our big dream is to create a permanent venue of this kind in a repurposed space in the architecturally textured fabric of Calcutta, a place where people come to share, exchange, relax, enjoy themselves, to challenge and be challenged back. A venue that is local, national and international in outlook, participation and reach, and part of an international network of vibrant and vital arts spaces
