Voices from the South

Selection Philosophy and Process

The project is a response to the dearth of performance work from regions of the Global South in the Edinburgh Fringe (and on international platforms in general). As India partner, our job is to curate and support a selection of new performance work from India to premiere digitally at the Fringe in August 2023. As stated, any performance maker based anywhere in India is welcome to apply. This is technically the only eligibility criterium.

We are very conscious that a great amount of excellent work in India goes unnoticed both on national and international platforms, and many wonderful artists rarely have access to such opportunities. We have tried to design our selection process to address this; from the many methods of application to the members of the selection committee. The latter are from diverse cultural backgrounds, and have very distinct socio-political engagements with the performing arts scenario in India and abroad. They will help curate and contextualise a showcase that pluralises and challenges what and who is usually represented and presented internationally as voices from India. We hope this will facilitate and enable fresh conversations and collaborations with a range of Indian artists.

The last date to receive application has been extended to 6 March 2022. We encourage all artists from all backgrounds to apply.
